Initial antiretroviral therapy: further insights on when to start and what to use

Multiple oral presentations, posters, and discussion at the XIV International AIDS Conference, Barcelona, Spain, July 7-12, 2002, may influence our approach to initial antiretroviral therapy.

Several large comparative randomised trials were presented, including the first long-term trial of tenofovir DF as part of a combination regimen for treatment-naive individuals. Studies on immunologic responses to treatment and complications of therapy that are also likely to affect our thoughts about initial antiretroviral therapy were also presented.
