Q and A

Question

How many people in the UK have HIV?

What is the most recent figure for how many people have HIV in the UK?

Answer

Public Health England published a HIV in the United Kingdom report in November 2014. It contains figures relating to HIV in the UK up to December 2013.

It says that an estimated 107,800 people in the UK have HIV. This compares with 102,600 in 2012.

This figure is largely made up of men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual black African men and women.

43,500 are MSM. 38,700 are heterosexual black African men and women.

Importantly the report estimates that 24%, almost a quarter of people who have HIV, are undiagnosed. This means that just under 25,900 people in the UK do not know they have HIV. This number is highest among black African men and women.
