Question

I have just been diagnosed and i’m afraid to tell my partner

I’m in Johannesburg i have just been diagnosed and my partner is negative, i am afraid to tell her. Can you help me?

Answer

Hi,

I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It is important to know that HIV does not need to affect any of the things you wanted to do with your life before you had it. It is always difficult to tell someone you have HIV.

Many couples live in relationship like yours though. They have one positive and one negative partner. You can have safe sex using condoms. When and if you want to have children you can also safely do this.

Are you getting support outside of the clinic? There are organisations that offer peer support and group work.

You can find more information about being newly diagnosed on our website.

You can contact the Treatment Action Campaign to ask about services near you.
