Q and A

Question

What is my life expectancy if I start ARVs today?

How long am i expected to live if i start ARVs today? I tested HIV+ last September.

Answer

Hi

Thanks for your email. It’s good you are considering treatment. Modern HIV treatment is very effective.

Do you know your CD4 count and viral? These are markers used to monitor your HIV.

So long as you start treatment before your CD4 count drops below 350 your life expectancy is very good, similar to somebody who is not HIV positive.

There are lots of previous questions about life expectancy here.

    Hi Moin,

You’re already doing the best thing possible for your HIV, you’re on treatment. Its the meds that will help your immune system to improve.

Do you know what your CD4 count is?

I am 65 years old and have started hiv treatment 3 months ago. I take my meds regularly with fail.

i didnt know I have hiv until I went to see a doctor. So I have no idea how long ago I have been infected. My weight went down from 80 kgs to 67kgs within a short time but with the treatment I am slowly gaining weight again as my appetite is good.

My doctor told me my immune system is weak. what can I do to improve my immune system?
