Q and A

Question

I am undetectable and want a baby, is this possible?

In my last HIV RNA test result I got 44 copies/mL. I am thinking about having a baby,
can I have direct sex with my wife?

Answer

Hi there,

Thanks for your question and background info.

Your viral load result is good, and also known as “undetectable”. Do you mind me asking if you are taking treatment?  This is the best way to stay undetectable. May I also ask if you know your wife’s status?

Provided that you keep your viral load below 50 copies/mL (undetectable) then your risk of transmission through sex to your partner is very low. This means it is possible for you to have unprotected sex when trying for a baby.

In the UK,  there are extra recommendations too:

  • Neither partner has another STI.
  • The HIV positive partner has a viral load below 50 copies/mL for over 6 months.
  • The HIV positive partner has regular viral load testing (3 to 4 monthly).

Your doctor should be able to discuss planning your pregnancy with your wife further.

In the meantime, please see our pregnancy guide for lots of useful information and this question for more information on your situation
