Question

How can I stop the strange taste I get as a side-effect of raltegravir?

Since starting on raltegravir (Isentress) I have developed a strange taste in my mouth. Is there anything I can do about this as it is putting me off my food and I am anxious not to lose any more weight?

Answer

Thank you for your question

Abnormal taste changes can be a side-effect of raltegravir.

If the taste is metallic, try using acids such as citrus juices, lemonade and foods marinated in vinegar such as pickles. These foods will prevent the metallic taste and increase saliva production which will also help.

Another thing you can do is to brush your tongue whenever you brush your teeth. Rinsing your mouth out with a mild salt solution (1 teaspoon in eight ounces of water) or baking soda solution (quarter of a teaspoon in eight ounces of water) a few times a day could help neutralize the pH levels in your mouth.

Talk to your dentist to ensure you are not having problems with your teeth or gums as this could be a cause of bad tastes in the mouth.

As with any symptom, you should speak to your doctor about this especially if this is causing lack of appetite. It could be that you should consider taking alternative drugs.
