Q and A

Question

Is it possible to be undetectable, but have a low CD4?

Me and my boyfriend for 3 years have tested twice and were negative. This year, We just got tested together and found out we’re both HIV positive. My viral load is undetectable and I have a high CD4. My boyfriend has an undetectable viral load but has a CD4 of 30. How does this happen? Why is his CD4 very low and yet has an undetectable vita load? He is on Bactrim right now. How is his chance of survival? Please, I am very scared for both of us but more for him.

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Feeling scared is normal. However, HIV is no longer the death sentence that it used to be especially if you are on medication. People who are positive can in most instances live long and health lives. In time it will be easier. Just give yourself some space to come to terms with your diagnoses.

To be able to answer your questions about your boyfriend, I need some more info. Is your boyfriend on meds? If yes, when did he start? If he’s just started, this may explain why his CD4 is low. With medication this will increase. Having an undetectable viral load is important.
