Q and A

Question

I’m taking Atripla, and two other nukes, is this OK?

I am a 32 male, started my meds 5-6 weeks ago (cd4 190, vl 57000) with lamivudine (10am and10pm), tenofovir, and atripla which i take every 10pm. Then I take cotri at 2pm to prevent any bacterial infection. Is this correct?

My 2nd question is that since the beginning of my meds, i started to have daily nasal congestion that often come and go. Fyi i never have any allergy beforehand. Is this part of the side effect of the meds or is there something else?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Nasal congestion isn’t a common side effect when taking ARV’s. Therefore, this is something that you should talk to your doctor about.

The cotri that you’re being given is common practice owing to your CD4 being below 350. Its important that you take this as it will help prevent infections.

It sounds like you’re being give a lot of ARVs. Have you been told why you need the Atripla plus another two nukes? I’m asking because usually if someone is on Atripla, that’s all they will take. This is because Atripla is a fixed dosed combination.
