Question
My girlfriend is on treatment, can we have sex without using condoms?
9 April 2017. Related: All topics, CD4 and viral load, HIV transmission.
I have an HIV positive girlfriend and we want to have unprotected sex, she’s also on treatment, is it possible?
Answer
Thanks for getting in touch.
If your girlfriend is on treatment and her viral load is undetectable, the risk of transmission is close to zero. Please see the results of the PARTNER study for more info:

Therefore, it is up to you if you wish to have sex without using condoms.
Hi Amanda,
If you didn’t breastfeed your baby and his tests were negative up until 12 months, then it is highly unlikely that your baby is positive. However, to know for sure its important that they are tested at 18 months, or soon after. I know this can be a very nerving experience, it does though need to be done.
Is my baby +ve?he was tested from birth to 12months -ve…..since then i never go tested him when he was 18months as i was scared to tested him as if something will change on the results…..i never breastfeed him…..
