Q and A

Question

What is Tribuss used for?

My partner and I tested negative, however when she had a miscarriage she was given a med called Tribuss. I thought this was a HIV med.

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Yes Tribuss is used to treat HIV. Therefore, I am not sure why your negative partner would be given Tribuss following a miscarriage. Owning to this, she should speak to the doctor who prescribed this to her.

Hi Nick, have you spoken to your partner about this? These tablets are used to treat HIV. They would not be taken all together as each tablet can be used a single treatment for HIV. If your partner is HIV positive and taking this treatment, the risk of transmission is very low. Being on treatment can reduce transmission risk to 0 and means you cannot get HIV. This is called U=U: https://i-base.info/u-equals-u/

HIV transmission is not guaranteed. There are a number of factors that change the risk (the biggest being treatment). Being on Tenemine does prevent transmission. Have you tested? Tenemine only works before an exposure after knowing your status. It would have prevented transmission for as long as you’ve been taking it but not before.

Hi there please help me understand.

I’m freaking out here.. I recently came across meds written Tribuss, Kovatrax and Odimune inside my ladies draw at her apartment. And honestly I’m going nuts(overthinking), my focus is below par. I have not confronted her about this.

Help know what could she be using the above mentioned pills for? Are they all for PreP or she’s HIV+? And what mergers should I take?

P.s. I’ve been taking Tenemine (Mylan), it’s been awhile now. I don’t know, somehow something in me told me to start using them. Thus, will these be effective if she’s positive?

    Thank you.

Hi Cape, your doctor will have prescribed Tribuss as PEP (https://i-base.info/guides/testing/pep-and-pepse). PEP is an HIV medication that you take for 28 days after a potential exposure from HIV. It is used to prevent transmission. Testing for HIV cannot be done as soon as you are potentially exposed. It takes a few weeks for results to be accurate. Even though you tested negative, this will not represent your most recent exposure.

Hi Vincent, HIV is a difficult virus to catch but it is even more difficult if viral load is low. If viral load is undetectable (less than 200 copies/mL) then U=U means the risk is zero, even if you don’t use condoms.

    Hi Seru,

If you’ve been off meds for two years, you need to see a HIV doctor or nurse. You’re going to need to have your viral load checked as well as your CD4 count, this is important as you need to know how your health is.

With regards to medication, ARVs in most countries are free, please talk to your doctor about this. A pharmacist won’t be able to give you ARVs without a prescription.

    Hi Moshood,

Please talk to your doctor about these symptoms. You are taking Tribuss as PEP. Please see here for more info about PEP.

In some countries Tribuss is not recommended as PEP. This is because these drugs have a low risk very serious side effects. Please check and ask if you should change to other PEP meds that will be easier for you to take.
