Q and A

Question

Is it OK to take TB meds as well as ARVs?

I’ve been taking my ARVs together with my TB resistance tablet, will this affect it working on my body?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Its very common that someone who is positive and on ARVs will also be using TB drugs. They’ll both work as they should do. The ARVs on the HIV, and the TB drugs will help prevent you contracting TB.

    Hi Dama,

As Lisa says above. it’s very common for people to be treated for HIV and TB. But this can be complex. So it’s a good idea to ask your doctor about all your treatment. You can ask about the best way to take your TB meds. And also find out how long you might have to take them.

    Hi Anastasia,

Unless you live in a TB prone area then no I don’t see why you’re being asked to take Winthrop. From what you’ve said your HIV is very much under control, and you’re doing great. I’d ask your doctor why they think you need this.

Hi Winnie, Winthrop isoniazid is used to treat TB. But both painful symptoms like these and the rash should be looked at by a doctor. You can ask the doctor if they are side effects or if something else is the cause.

This will all depend on your personal situation. It is though something that your doctor will be able to advise you about.
