Q and A

Question

Undetectable, can I transmit?

I’ve been on meds for a month and my viral load is already undetectable, this is great. Should I get my partner to use PrEP, or are they OK because I’m undetectable?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

The evidence that we have is that if someone has an undetectable viral load then no they cannot transmit HIV when having sex without using a condom. For more info please see Q’s 9 and 14 here:

    Hi Jerry,

The evidence is there. When someone has an undetectable viral load they CANNOT transmit HIV when having sex without a condom. Please see Q’s 9 and 14 here: http://i-base.info/qa/what-are-the-most-asked-questions

This is supported by UNAIDS, PEPFAR, ISA and BHIVA to name just a few organisations.

Should always use a condom to be on the safe side. I never heard that one cannot give some HIV or AIDS. Because they’re viral load is undetectable.
