Q and A

Question

How do I get a career in HIV?

Hi,
I would like to say thank you for all the information on this site. It has helped me learn so much about HIV.

I am HIV positive and I would like to pursue a career in HIV as HIV is a very fascinating field and I feel I have a lot to offer as a result of what I have learned and personal experience. I am struggling to find out what options there are ie social care, what courses I would have to take and what opportunities are out there.

Thanks for your help

Answer

Thank you for your question.

It is great that you are showing such an interest in working on HIV projects. There are lots of opportunities out there to work in social care, advocacy, training, medicine and awareness-raising. Without knowing your individual circumstances such as any qualifications or previous work experience you may have it is difficult to give a more specific answer. If you want to let me know a bit about your background then I can look into it further.

Have you thought about looking into what is happening in your area? For example, you could volunteer at your local support group for positive people offering counselling and support services. For more information on this you should contact the Terrence Higgins Trust as they have lists of support groups across the country.

Alternatively you could become a treatment activist by joining the UK Community Advisory Board (CAB). UK CAB run quarterly training meetings for advocates in London. Through these meetings you can access up to date treatment information and network with other organisations working in HIV-related projects.

Good luck in whatever it is you decide to do.
