Q and A

Question

I’ve missed taking meds for 8 days, is this OK?

I’ve been undetectable for over a year. I haven’t taken my meds in 8 days. What will happen to me?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

If you’ve missed taking your medication for 8 days, it’s very likely that your viral load will have rebounded. What this means is that you’ll no longer be undetectable. If you have access to ARVs it’s important that you restart taking them. Ideally you should also let your doctor know that you’ve missed 8 days of meds. Depending on where you are they might do a viral load test.

If you’re having issues with access, when do you think you’ll be able to restart meds?

Just to let you know, though this isn’t ideal, you’re not suddenly going to get ill as HIV doesn’t work like that.

    Hi Chileshe,

If his viral load was undetectable at the time of you having sex without a condom, then no, there’s no risk. However, if it was, then yes they’ll have been a risk. Though you’re scared you’re going to need to test.
