Q and A

Question

Which drug is safer as a malaria prophylaxis if I am HIV positive?

Thank you for your reply to my question on malaraia prophlaxis.

The drugs that are most available here are, Clroquine, premaquine, quartum, and fansidar. Which one is safer as a prophylaxis?

Thanks

Answer

Thank you for replying to your earlier question.

All anti-malaria drugs have the potential to interact with some HIV meds, so you are right to want to check this.

The Liverpool University drug interaction website can check these interactions online.

Information below is about interactions between your HIV treatments and choloroquine, fansidar (sulfadoxine and pyrimethamine) and premaquine. These malaria treatments do not interact with your HIV medicines.

The only malaria prophylaxis you need to worry about appears to be quinine which has the potential to interact with efavirenz (Sustanon or Sustiva). If you do decide to take this anyway then your HIV doctor will have to monitor you closely.

Quarlum I am not able to find anywhere. It is possible this is a generic name or a retail name. If you can find out what medicine is inside this tablet I can let you know if there are any interactions.
