Q and A

Question

If a HIV negative man comes inside a HIV positive woman what are the risks to the man?

What is the risk if a negative man having sex with a positive woman uses a condom but then when the man is about to come he takes off the condom and he comes inside of the woman? Will the man be infected?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

Any risk is not related to whether or not you cum, but to other factors. These include how long the contact lasts (in this case maybe just a few seconds) so the risk will be very low.

If your partner is taking HIV treatment and has an undetectable viral load, then the risk will be zero, even if you don;t use condoms at all.

The biggest risk of transmission relates to viral load. When this is undetectable the risk becomes zero then transmission doesn’t occur.

Are you asking this question so your partner can become pregnant? If yes, the it is easy to  still conceive naturally, but better if your partner is on treatment.

This question was updated in January 2018 from an original answer posted in December 2010. i-Base no longer answers individual questions about HIV transmission and risk but please see: Question 1, 5, 6 and 9 at this link).

Hi Kyle, you are very lucky that you didn;t get serious burns from the bleach – that was not a good thing to do.

    Please see:

    Hi.
I just would like to find out how possible it is that I could be infected by a HIV virus, I slept with a woman HIV positive and I didn’t use protection. It only lasted a couple of seconds because I pulled out and ran to the bathroom and wiped my foreskin with thick/undiluted bleach then I put my pants on without washing and left my foreskin open the entire day.

Hi Phila, no, ARVs with control HIV and let your immune system recover. If you get side effects – which some people get – then you doctor can change to other meds. A few people with very low CD4 counts (usually less than 50) may get other infections shortly after starting. This is still better than not taking ARVs tho.

Will arvs make people to be more sick.

I had a sex with a girl but on the process the condom broke and I immediately withdrew without I or the girl ejaculated. will I contact HIV if it happens that the girl has it?

Hi Grace, please talk to your doctor soon about how you are feeling. If you meds include a drug called efavirenz, this could be making you more anxious or depressed. If you are doing so well on treatment for the last six years, there is no reason why this is going to stop now. I am worried about you though so please call your doctor.
