Q and A

Question

If I stop taking Bactrim, is it bad for my baby?

I’m 5 months pregnant and I have been taking Lamzid, Bactrim and Nevirapine since I was diagnosed in 2008. I’ve stopped using Bactrim, is this safe for my baby?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

Congratulations on becoming pregnant! The Bactrim you are taking is to prevent opportunistic infections like pneumonia. If your CD4 count is below 200 then it is often recommended to continue taking the Bactrim during pregnancy. By protecting your own health you are also protecting your baby.

However, the most important treatment to prevent your baby from becoming is positive is the Lamzid (Combivir) and the nevirapine. You should continue taking this throughout the pregnancy.
