Q and A

Question

I want to have a baby but I am positive, how can I do it?

I am a positive male with a CD4 count of over 1,500 and a viral load less than 20. I am doing great according to my doctor. Me and my best friend want to have a baby next test I will have my sperm tested what should I do from there?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

It is great news that you are doing so well on treatment!

To enable me to answer your question more specifically it would help to know whether your friend is also HIV positive and whether they are aware of your status? I am assuming your friend is female?

For information on how to conceive safely if the man is positive and woman negative please follow this link.

If you are stable on treatment then it is unlikely that you would transmit the virus providing you had sex when your friend was at her most fertile and using adequate lubrication etc. You would need to talk to your doctor about this first. It might be useful for you and your friend to read the Swiss Statement.

Good luck with starting your family!
