Question

Am I at risk?

I am starting a new job in a company and I work as a microbiologist. Could this be dangerous for me as I am HIV positive?

The work involves sampling product, plating it, identifying organisms if there is contamination amongst other quality laboratory duties. I also find that sometimes I get pains in my lower back (kidney area) and bone pains this only happened since I was diagnosed almost two years ago.

Answer

Thank you for your questions. First of all, good luck in your new job. Doing the work you do should not put you at risk, if you follow proper clinical practice.

In terms of the other ailments you mentioned, they may, or may not, be HIV-related. With any symptom, especially if it involves pain, it is important that you have them checked out by a specialist.
