How can I get pregnant when I am HIV positive?

Can you please give me information on the right procedure in getting pregnant when you are HIV positive?

Thank you for your question.

There are different options as regards getting pregnant when you are HIV positive.

The options take into consideration whether your partner is also HIV positive or whether they are HIV negative.

    Hi Dorcas,

Other then aluvia are you taking any other ARVs? If you are what?

Being HIV positive shouldn’t be a barrier to having children. Many women all over the world who are positive have kids, and with negative partners. What’s important is that you’re on treatment. This is because that other than helping your health, if you’re on treatment and have an undetectable viral load the risk of transmitting HIV to your partner is close to zero.

    Hi Gladys,

There’s no reason why you can’t have children. Being HIV positive should not be a barrier. Please see quesiton 6 here:

    Hi Nency,

If you’re asking can you have sex without condoms so that you can conceive naturally, then the answer is yes.

If this wasn’t what you were asking, could you please be more specific.

Both me and my husband are HIV positive. We’re desperately trying to get pregnant. Can you tell us how to.

    Hi Jeanneth,

You being positive shouldn’t be a barrier to having children. Nor, should it matter that your partner is negative. this is because you’re on meds. You being on meds means that the risk of you transmitting HIV to your boyfriend is close to zero. Please see the results of the PARTNER study:

With regards to the fact that you were trying before you started meds, is there anything specific you’d like to ask?

I’m HIV+ and my boyfriend is negative, he wants children. What should I do because we were trying before I started to take treatment.

    Hi Spha,

If you’re asking if you as a HIV positive woman can have kids, the answer is yes. You can also have kids with someone who is negative. Many women do.

If you’re worried about transmission. If you’re on treatment and have an undetectable viral load then the risks are close to zero. Please see the results from the PARTNER study:
