Q and A

Question

How can I get pregnant when I am HIV positive?

Can you please give me information on the right procedure in getting pregnant when you are HIV positive?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

There are different options as regards getting pregnant when you are HIV positive.

The options take into consideration whether your partner is also HIV positive or whether they are HIV negative.

As you have not indicated this in your email, I am sending you our general guide on HIV, pregnancy and women’s health. The guide includes detailed information on the various options available. Please follow this link to this guide to HIV and pregnancy for more information.

    Hi Stanilita,

You both being positive shouldn’t be a barrier to having kids. However, i-base advocates aren’t medical doctors so I can say how your partner being paraplegic would influence you getting pregnant. For this you’ll need to seek specialist medical advice.

    Hi Geof,

There’s no reason why you can’t have a child. If you’re worried about transmission, then you’ll need to be on medication. Once your viral load is undetectable the risk of transmission is close to zero. Please see here for more info:

This means that you and your wife can try and conceive naturally.

    Hi Sammy,

I’m not sure how the abortion that you had last year would have affected you. However, you being positive isn’t a reason why you can’t have children in the future.

When were you diagnosed? And how are you coping?

Hey, I had unsafe abortion last year, and now I found out that I’m HIV positive. Will I be able to have children in the future?

    Hi Thandiwe,

The above post gives you information about HIV and pregnancy.

Owing to your age, its important to realize that a woman’s fertility is often low at the age of 49.
