Question

If you are pregnant, can the results of an initial HIV test be incorrect?

Answer

No. These tests are very accurate.

If the result is negative, then you are HIV-negative. If the results is positive, then the result is confirmed using a second test, to eliminate the very small chance of a false-positive result.

HIV tests are extremely important during pregnancy, in order for HIV-positive women who are unaware of their status, to be diagnosed in time to be able to use anti-HIV drugs to protect their baby from HIV infection.

If you are HIV-negative at the start of your pregnancy, it is sometimes important to re-test for HIV before giving birth, if you may have been exposed to HIV during your pregnancy.
