Q and A

Question

How long does neuropathy take to improve after changing from d4T?

Could you please advise how long does it take for peripheral neuropathy (numb/tingling feet, difficult walking/standing for long, experiencing night shock and sweating around ankles) to recover after changing medicine (has taken stavudine for 2 months)? My CD4 is now 99.

Answer

Peripheral neuropathy (PN) can be caused by HIV, especially with a CD4 count under 100, but it can also be a side effect of the HIV medicine d4T (stavudine).

It is sometimes difficult to know the cause but if you are suffering from numbness and pain in both hands and/or both feet then it is more likely to be a side effect of the drugs rather than related to HIV.

It is good that you have talked to your doctor and god that you have changed treatment. The earlier you switch the better the chance that this will get better. However, you may have to wait up to two months to know how much this has helped.

Often symptoms can continue to get worse before you notice an improvement.  Symptoms can sometimes stop although this does not happen to everyone.
