Q and A

Question

Can I use AZT and Atroiza during pregnancy?

Hi, I am HIV positive and pregnant and i use zidovudine (AZT) for treatment. Can I use Atroiza as well?

Answer

Hi

In the UK it would be unusual to use AZT and Atroiza in pregnancy.

But there may be a reason why your doctor wants to do this, especially if you were diagnosed late in pregnancy.

In the UK it is now more common for women to use a three-drug combination like Atroiza than to use AZT. Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

In the UK we use Atripla rather than Atroiza, but the three drugs are the same – efavirenz, emtricibatine and tenofovir.

Please see this pregnancy guide for more information.

Hi Connie, like other HIV meds, Atroiza is safe to use when trying for a baby.
