Q and A

Question

My CD4 has only risen slowly, should i be alarmed?

In January 2014, my CD4 count was 190 and viral load 131600. My doctor stated me on Atripla and Purbac. After 6 months CD4 slowly increased to 256 and viral load dropped to 68 . Do I have to be alarmed by the slow increase of CD4?

Answer

Hi,

Your results show that you are doing well. They are not unusual and a doctor in the UK would not be concerned with them.

Your CD4 count is used to measure your immune system. Your viral load is used to see how much HIV is in your blood. It is great that your viral load is so low. It shows that there is only a small amount of the virus in your bloodstream.

It is also normal for your CD4 count to increase slowly. This is because it takes time for your immune system to repair itself.
