This is true for both oral and injectable PrEP.<\/strong><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Firstly, resistance relates to HIV and not the person. So an HIV negative person can\u2019t be drug resistant.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Drug resistance is only a risk if you become HIV positive but don\u2019t yet know this. This is especially likely with low adherence, even though the risk is still low.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Drug resistance affects PrEP in two different ways, both of which are very rare.<\/p>\n<p><b>1. Drug resistance that develops while taking PrEP.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Taking PrEP if you are HIV positive will lead to HIV developing drug resistance. This is why the HIV test before PrEP is essential. It is also why some people need to re-test after six weeks.<\/li>\n<li>Becoming HIV positive during a break from PrEP and not re-testing before starting again.<\/li>\n<li>Missing too many PrEP doses, leading to drug levels that are too low to still protect you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>2. Coming into contact with drug-resistant HIV.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In this case the drug resistance will stop PrEP from working.<\/li>\n<li>Very few cases have been reported of PrEP not working because of drug-resistant HIV.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The chance of drug resistance to PrEP is very low.
