{"id":1846,"date":"2024-11-01T12:00:58","date_gmt":"2024-11-01T12:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moomango.co.uk\/guides\/?page_id=1846"},"modified":"2025-01-20T15:05:49","modified_gmt":"2025-01-20T15:05:49","slug":"trans-people-and-hiv-treatment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/starting\/trans-people-and-hiv-treatment","title":{"rendered":"Trans\u00a0people\u00a0and\u00a0HIV\u00a0meds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>HIV drugs are very safe and effective for transgender people.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Most modern HIV meds do not have any drug interactions with gender-affirming hormone therapy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, it is important to check for potential interactions and for your doctor to know about these.<\/p>\n<p>This is because some of the older HIV meds can interact with some hormones.<\/p>\n<p>These are mainly:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>HIV protease inhibitors (PIs) especially if boosted by ritonavir or cobicistat. This included darunavir, atazanavir and lopinavir.<\/li>\n<li>Older NNRTIs (nevirapine, efavirenz and etravirine).<\/li>\n<li>Lenacapavir can increase the levels of some androgen blockers (bicalutamide, cyproterone acetate and dutasteride).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Most of these HIV drugs are not widely used and none of them are recommended for first-line ART in the UK .<\/p>\n<p>An excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/liverpool-hiv-hep.s3.amazonaws.com\/prescribing_resources\/pdfs\/000\/000\/219\/original\/Hormone_Chart_2024_Oct.pdf?1730389177\" rel=\"noopener\">factsheet from the Liverpool University<\/a> lists all the potential interactions, between gender hormones and HIV meds.
