{"id":5965,"date":"2021-06-01T12:00:25","date_gmt":"2021-06-01T12:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/?page_id=5965"},"modified":"2021-06-17T07:33:00","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T07:33:00","slug":"which-body-fluids-are-infectious","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/testing\/which-body-fluids-are-infectious","title":{"rendered":"Which body fluids are infectious?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The risk of HIV transmission is related to different factors. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>These include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which body fluids are infectious.<\/li>\n<li>How infection occurs &#8211; the \u2018route&#8217; of infection.<\/li>\n<li>Other risk factors \u2013 including viral load, type of sex, genetics etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only some body fluids have the potential to be infectious.<\/p>\n<p>In someone not taking HIV treatment (ART), these include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sexual fluids (semen and vaginal fluid).<\/li>\n<li>Mucus from the vagina and anus.<\/li>\n<li>Blood.<\/li>\n<li>Drinking breastmilk is infectious to a baby but not to an adult.<\/li>\n<li>Tears (from crying) might be a theoretical risk. This is unlikely to be an actual risk.<\/li>\n<li>Saliva, spit, urine and faeces are <b>not<\/b> infectious for HIV.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>HIV positive people taking effective ART are NOT sexually infectious.
