{"id":6047,"date":"2021-06-01T12:00:38","date_gmt":"2021-06-01T12:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/?page_id=6047"},"modified":"2021-06-17T08:25:42","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T08:25:42","slug":"medical-male-circumcision","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/testing\/medical-male-circumcision","title":{"rendered":"Male circumcision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6327\" title=\"Fig 1i Male circumcision FINAL\" src=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/files\/2011\/12\/Fig-1i-Male-circumcision-FINAL.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"523\" height=\"198\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>In heterosexual sex, a circumcised man has a 50% lower chance of catching HIV compared to a man who is not circumcised.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Male circumcision does not reduce the risk of <i>transmitting<\/i> the virus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It does not protect from other routes of infection.<\/p>\n<p>This protection might be because the glans (penis head) in uncircumcised men contains a higher proportion of HIV target cells.<\/p>\n<p>The inner foreskin of the penis is a membrane that HIV can easily penetrate.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is also more delicate and more sensitive to damage than skin.
