{"id":6051,"date":"2021-06-01T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-01T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/?page_id=6051"},"modified":"2021-06-17T08:27:47","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T08:27:47","slug":"other-stis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/testing\/other-stis","title":{"rendered":"Other sexually transmitted infections (STIs)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6052\" title=\"Fig 1j STIs\" src=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/files\/2011\/12\/Fig-1j-STIs.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"529\" height=\"138\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Other STIs in either the HIV negative or HIV positive partner can increase the risk of HIV transmission. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>STIs include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chlamydia.<\/li>\n<li>Genital warts (HPV &#8211; human pappiloma virus).<\/li>\n<li>Gonorrhoa.<\/li>\n<li>Syphilis.<\/li>\n<li>Herpes.<\/li>\n<li>LGV (lymphogranuloma venereum).<\/li>\n<li>Hepatitis A and B.<\/li>\n<li>Hepatitis C (for HIV positive gay men).<\/li>\n<li>Trichomoniasis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>STIs can reduce immune protection against other infections in HIV negative people. So HIV has a better chance of finding one of these cells.\u00a0See Fig 10 (c) in the section <a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/testing\/skin-mucous-membranes-and-hiv-transmission\">Skin, mucous membranes and HIV transmission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With herpes, for example, HIV target cells stay at much higher levels even weeks after a sore has cleared up.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is why HIV negative people with herpes, are at higher risk of catching HIV, even when they have no current sores.<\/p>\n<p>Any sore is a way for HIV to enter the body.<\/p>\n<p>An HIV positive person with an STI may be more infectious for HIV. This may also cause their undetectable viral load in blood to be at higher levels in genital fluid.<\/p>\n<p>HIV positive people might also be at greater risk of catching STIs. For example, hepatitis C (HCV) is sexually transmitted for HIV positive gay men but rarely by heterosexual sex.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The reasons for this are not clear.<\/p>\n<p>HCV is usually transmitted by contact with infected blood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If viral load is undetectable, there is no risk of HIV, even if there are other STIs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/prep\">PrEP<\/a> also protects against HIV, even if there are other STI&#8217;s.
