It can remain infectious for days to weeks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cleaning syringes with bleach reduces the risk of HIV transmission, but it is less effective against HCV.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Sharing syringes (even measuring syringes), cotton, water and ties can also be a risk for HCV.<\/li>\n<li>Using clean needles and your own equipment each time you inject stops both HIV and HCV<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>including reinfection.<\/li>\n<li>It also reduces the risk of other infections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sharing equipment for injecting recreational drugs (slamming) has a high risk of HCV transmission (see <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/hepc\/hcv-transmission-during-sex-between-men\">link<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/hepc\/chemsex\">chemsex<\/a><\/strong>).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This includes when taking mephedrone and crystal meth in gay clubs and\/or at sex parties.<\/p>\n<p>People who inject drugs often face barriers to HCV treatment.
