{"id":12423,"date":"2024-08-30T12:00:14","date_gmt":"2024-08-30T12:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/?p=12423"},"modified":"2025-06-10T11:36:49","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T11:36:49","slug":"generic-arvs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/12423","title":{"rendered":"Generic ARVs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A generic drug is one\u00a0that is manufactured by a different pharmaceutical company to the company that invented the medicine.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Generic drugs are widely used in all countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the UK about 60% to 85% of all NHS prescriptions are for generic drugs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The percentage varies depending on whether this is based on number of prescriptions or overall cost of drugs. This includes medicines\u00a0for heart disease, diabetes, blood pressure, statins to lower cholesterol, pain relief, cancer and now HIV.<\/p>\n<p>Generic medicines contain the same active ingredients as the original drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Generic combination pills are also widely used in low income countries, even when patents are still in place in high-income countries.<\/p>\n<p>Generic drugs are also widely used in high-income countries after the patents end.<\/p>\n<p>There are many generic versions of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/3541\">tenofovir DF (TD)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/3516\">lamivudine (3TC)<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/8851\">dolutegravir<\/a> coformulated into a single pill (TLD<\/strong>). These include Acriptega, Damicava, Dovimil, Emdolten, Lanograv, Lavern, Luvigen, Milutin, Nuvaco, Odystra, Ranega, Reydin, Telado, Telatri, Temiv, Tladeez, Viripil, Volutrip and Vulante. These combinations are just as good. FTC and 3TC are very similar medicines. Some use TAF instead of TDF, which are also very similar.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The first generic version of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/13752\">Biktarvy<\/a><\/strong> is made by Hetero Pharma with a brand name <strong>Taffic<\/strong>. This is another integrase-based FDC. These medicines contain <a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/3541\">tenofovir-DF<\/a> plus <a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/3535\">emtricitabine<\/a> and are used as PrEP by HIV negative people to protect against HIV infection. It is legal in the UK to import generic medicines for personal use, even if the patent on the brand medicine has not yet expired.<\/p>\n<p>Generic versions of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/3513\">Kivexa<\/a><\/strong> include Dumiva and Rilovia (made by Mylan) and Heteruam (Lupin).<\/p>\n<p>Although not a generic, <a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/3547\"><strong>Kaletra<\/strong><\/a> (lopinavir\/ritonavir) is called Aluvia in many countries.<\/p>\n<p>Generic versions of <a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/734\"><strong>efavirenz<\/strong><\/a> include Adiva, Avifanz, Efamat, Efatec, Efavir, Efavirenz, Efcure, Eferven, Efrin, Erige, Estiva, Evirenz, Filginase, Stocrin, Sulfina V, Sustiva, Virorrever, and Zuletel.<\/p>\n<p>Generic versions of <a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/guides\/3543\"><strong>nevirapine<\/strong><\/a> include Brinoprin (Hetero Pharma), Nevir (Forrester Pharma), Nevivir (Activo Health), Viropon (Novagen Pharma) and many generics also called Nevirapine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rather than using the brand name, look for the list of active ingredients. This is usually in smaller text on the box or leaflet that comes with your meds.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This website in South Africa has a good search engine for looking for generic versions of many different medicines. For example, this include different antibiotics, as well as HIV meds.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.generic.co.za\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.generic.co.za<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Drug interactions with HIV meds, including dolutegravir<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Drug interactions:<\/strong> There is a caution for interactions between dolutegravir (included in TLD) with some <strong>supplements<\/strong> <strong>(containing\u00a0calcium, magnesium or aluminium), antacids and multivitamins<\/strong>. This also includes antacids that include magnesium or aluminium.<br \/>\n<strong>This requires separating the dolutegravir dose. <\/strong>These products need to be taken a <strong>minimum of two hours after dolutegravir or six hours before.\u00a0<\/strong>Another important interaction is that dolutegravir doubles levels of metformin, and requires careful monitoring.<\/li>\n<li><em>This is only for supplements &#8211; it is NOT a concern for foods like milk and cheese that contain calcium.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Drug interactions. <\/strong>Please tell your doctor or pharmacist about any other drugs or supplements before taking them with TLD.
