{"id":12147,"date":"2003-11-01T14:40:43","date_gmt":"2003-11-01T14:40:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/?p=12147"},"modified":"2014-05-27T10:52:30","modified_gmt":"2014-05-27T10:52:30","slug":"vatican-says-hiv-can-pass-through-condoms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/12147","title":{"rendered":"Vatican says HIV can pass through condoms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Graham McKerrow, HIV i-Base<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unbelievably, the Vatican is telling people across four continents that condoms do not stop HIV because they are full of holes, according to a Panorama documentary broadcast on BBC1 TV in October. Some priests even say condoms are \u2018laced\u2019 with HIV.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, president of the Vatican\u2019s Pontifical Council for the Family, told the programme in a filmed interview: \u201cThe AIDS virus is roughly 450 times smaller than the spermatazoon. The spermatzaoon can easily pass through the \u2018net\u2019 that is formed by the condom. These margins of uncertainty \u2026 should represent an obligation on the part of the health ministries and all these campaigns to act in the same way as they do with regard to cigarettes, which they state to be a danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organisation has countered the Vatican\u2019s claims, calling them \u201cincorrect\u201d and \u201cdangerous\u201d. The WHO says condoms can break or slip off but there are not holes through which the virus can pass. It says \u201cconsistent and correct\u201d use of condoms cuts the risk of infection by 90%.<\/p>\n<p>A scientific research group that included the WHO and the US National Institutes of Health, carried out research that found that \u201cintact condoms are essentially impermeable to particles the size of STD pathogens including the smallest sexually transmitted virus\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Cardinal Trujillo dismissed the evidence, saying: \u201cThey are wrong about that \u2026 this is an easily recognisable fact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Panorama found the Vatican\u2019s advice repeated by Raphael Ndingi Nzeki, the archbishop of Nairobi, Catholic nuns and church leaders around the world.
