\"HTBThis bumper summer issue of HTB covers conference reports from\u00a0AIDS2014<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Paediatric Workshop<\/a>\u00a0held in Melbourne in July. We also report from the\u00a0INTEREST meeting<\/a>\u00a0held in Lusaka in May.<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Both Melbourne meetings were overshadowed by the shocking news of the delegates who died on flight MH17 \u2013 many presentations included tributes to these colleagues and friends.<\/p>\n

In ten reports from AIDS 2014 we include studies on\u00a0Treatment as Prevention<\/a>\u00a0(TasP); results from\u00a0open-label oral PrEP<\/a>\u00a0and use of\u00a0lower dose AZT<\/a>. We include an overview of\u00a0cure research<\/a>\u00a0(see further cure reports later in this issue, including on the\u00a0Mississippi child<\/a>) and review studies related to\u00a0transgender issues and HIV<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Summaries from the paediatric workshop include: an update on\u00a0paediatric ARV<\/a>\u00a0development; use of\u00a0d4T in children<\/a>; that\u00a03TC (or FTC) monotherapy<\/a>\u00a0is suboptimal as a bridging strategy for adolescents; the advantages of a rationalised\u00a0paediatric antiretroviral formulary in Malawi<\/a>; time to first-line failure in the\u00a0IeDEA cohort<\/a>\u00a0and the sometimes confusing influence of early ART on\u00a0antibody detection in children<\/a>.<\/p>\n

INTEREST reports include reassuring Zambian data both on\u00a0short-term safety of atazanavir\/ritonavir<\/a>-based second line treatment and on\u00a0pregnancy outcomes<\/a>\u00a0for women receiving ART; unsurprisingly one study showed that uptake of ART is influenced by\u00a0distance to the health facility<\/a>\u00a0in a rural setting; and\u00a0genotyping using dried blood spots<\/a>\u00a0was feasible in a rural South African setting.<\/p>\n

Other news questions\u00a0UK access to dolutegravir<\/a>\u00a0and the soon-to-follow single-tablet regimen.\u00a0Have you commented yet<\/a>?<\/p>\n

New guidelines include those from\u00a0WHO for key populations<\/a>: gay men, people who inject drugs, people in prisons, sex workers and transgender people; and\u00a0EASL guidelines<\/a>\u00a0for hepatitis C. \u00a0New ARV prescribing guidelines for London<\/a>\u00a0are now released – and, so far, only apparently available on the i-Base website.<\/p>\n

Gareth Hardy reports on whether changes in\u00a0bone mineral density<\/a>\u00a0are related to immune activation and with Richard Jefferys covers basic science and vaccine research.<\/p>\n

And finally we report on a\u00a0US Senate investigation of Gilead<\/a>\u00a0for the sofosbuvir price that has the potential to bankrupt Federal healthcare and add $300 annually to every American insurance premium for the next five years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
