{"id":31758,"date":"2017-06-26T12:09:06","date_gmt":"2017-06-26T12:09:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/?p=31758"},"modified":"2017-07-21T20:08:35","modified_gmt":"2017-07-21T20:08:35","slug":"new-study-of-combined-hiv-prevention-and-contraception-ring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/31758","title":{"rendered":"New study of combined HIV prevention and contraception ring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Simon Collins, HIV i-Base<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On 3 May 2017 nonprofit International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) announced the launch the first study using a combined HIV PrEP and contraceptive vaginal ring.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The three-monthly ring is designed to simultaneously slowly release both the antiretroviral dapivirine and the contraceptive hormone levonorgestrel.<\/p>\n<p>The primary aim of the MTN-030\/IPM 041 study is safety and pharmacokinetics rather than efficacy to prevent either HIV infection or pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>Although davivirine showed efficacy compared to placebo in women who used the ring in two phase 3 studies, dapivirine has not be approved as PrEP.<\/p>\n<p>Ref: IPM press statement.
