{"id":32761,"date":"2017-10-01T11:46:19","date_gmt":"2017-10-01T11:46:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/?p=32761"},"modified":"2017-10-05T14:32:02","modified_gmt":"2017-10-05T14:32:02","slug":"psychological-impact-of-prep-beyond-efficacy-and-cost-effectiveness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/32761","title":{"rendered":"Psychological impact of PrEP: beyond efficacy and cost-effectiveness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Simon\u00a0Collins,\u00a0HIV\u00a0i-Base<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>The impact of PrEP on quality of life in reducing HIV-related anxiety and more dynamic and fulfilled sex lives is potentially as important as hard endpoints for reduced HIV infections.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mitzy Gafos presented experiences from using PrEP as part of the UK PROUD study, based on semi-structured interviews with 41 participants.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to reporting behavioural changes, the results gave insight into psychological impact of PrEP.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these imply significant changes in outlooks and approach to life:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrEP has replaced fear as the central focus of relationships\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe feeling of relief of 25 years of weight, of stress&#8230; where every sexual interaction is a wave of risk\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorry obviously ruins the sexual experience &#8230; removing that worry&#8230; probably improved my life over the past 2 years\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first time in my life since I started taking it I actually have had sex as I like it \u2013 without having this horrible feeling of \u2018my god\u2019 after\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was selecting negative [partners]\u2026 I am more looking at the person now &#8230; not if they\u2019re positive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is more intimacy not using the condoms and the tablets can prevent me from getting HIV\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives you the peace of mind the added control of minimising that risk\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been very good for my mental health (ADHD) because I\u2019ve not had to associate sex with danger so much which is good\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I wasn\u2019t taking it, sooner or later the inevitable is going to happen\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole experience has really made me quite liberated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t changed the way I think because I am taking this pill. Having these pills doesn\u2019t give me an excuse to be more crazy than I already am\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no marked difference, I was having a huge amount of condomless sex before\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3>comment<\/h3>\n<p><b>Overall, these quotes provide insight into the qualitative impact that PrEP can have.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>When PrEP had no direct impact on behaviour, this was often because the level of risk was already so high.
