{"id":39597,"date":"2021-01-22T07:35:37","date_gmt":"2021-01-22T07:35:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/?p=39597"},"modified":"2021-06-07T09:02:20","modified_gmt":"2021-06-07T09:02:20","slug":"nice-issue-guidelines-on-long-covid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/39597","title":{"rendered":"NICE issue UK guidelines on long COVID"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"HTBsubhead2articletitle\"><strong><b><span lang=\"EN-US\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/COVID-19-graphic.png\" width=\"231\" height=\"142\" \/><\/span><\/b>Simon Collins, HIV i-Base<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">On 18 December 2020, NICE issued brief guidelines on \u2018identifying, assessing and managing&#8217; the long-term effects of COVID-19 in the UK.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Long COVID is also called Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), post COVID and long haul COVID.<\/p>\n<p>These guidelines include recommendations for adults, children and young people.<\/p>\n<p>The guidelines<span lang=\"EN-US\"> also include advice on services to support people with long COVID.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Long COVID is defined in three categories: <\/span>acute, ongoing symptomatic and a post-COVID syndrome.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"HTBBODYindent\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Acute symptoms that last longer than four weeks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"HTBBODYindent\">New or ongoing symptoms from 4-12 weeks or more after the start of acute COVID-19.<\/li>\n<li class=\"HTBBODYindent\">Post-COVID symptoms consistent with COVID-19 that continue for more than 12 weeks and are not explained by an alternative diagnosis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The risk of developing long COVID <\/span>is not thought to be linked to the severity of the acute COVID\u201119 (including whether they were in hospital).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\">Potential symptoms include.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-US\">Respiratory (difficulty breathing, cough, chest pain, palpitations).<\/span><\/li>\n<li>General (tiredness, fever, pain).<\/li>\n<li>Neurological (brain fog, memory, headache, poor sleep, neuropathy, dizziness, delirium).<\/li>\n<li>Gastrointestinal (nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, anorexia).<\/li>\n<li>Musculoskeletal (joint or muscle pain).<\/li>\n<li>Psychological\/psychiatric (depression).<\/li>\n<li>Ear, nose and throat (tinnitus, earache, sore throat and loss of taste and\/or smell.<\/li>\n<li>Skin-related (rashes).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>The guidelines refer to the importance of individualising care, based on involving relevant specialists to manage symptoms. This should ideally be through a multidisciplinary service with a single point of care.<\/p>\n<p>They include research questions based on areas of limited evidence (such as impact of age, sex and ethnicity on long COVID).<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"HTBcommenttitle\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">comment<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">The guidelines are for health workers and commissioners.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">This means that technically the document does not include information for people who actually have COVID-19.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">They do not include specific treatment or management recommendations or address the situation if referral services are not immediately available.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBsubhead2articletitle\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">Webcasts from an important 2-day NIH workshop on Long COVID are now online.
