{"id":41022,"date":"2021-08-01T06:32:25","date_gmt":"2021-08-01T06:32:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/?p=41022"},"modified":"2021-08-01T10:17:49","modified_gmt":"2021-08-01T10:17:49","slug":"antibody-responses-to-pfizer-vaccine-in-hiv-positive-people-with-high-cd4-counts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/41022","title":{"rendered":"Antibody responses to Pfizer vaccine in HIV positive people with high CD4 counts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"HTBsubhead2articletitle\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/COVID-19-graphic.png\" width=\"231\" height=\"142\" \/><\/span>Simon Collins, HIV i-Base<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">A small cohort of 12 HIV positive people had similar immune responses to the Pfizer BNT162b2 vaccine as 17 HIV negative people. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The study included 12 HIV positive people (7 women, 5 men) and 17 HIV negative controls (7 women, 10 men) with blood samples taken 7 to 17 days after the second vaccine dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Baseline characteristics of the HIV group included median CD4 count or 913 cells\/mm<sup>3<\/sup> (range: 649 to 1678) with undetectable viral load &lt;50 copies\/mL (n=9) or very low level viraemia &lt;100 copies\/mL (n=3).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">There was no significant difference between antibody titers in the positive vs negative groups (median 8.84 vs 9.49 respectively, p=0.07. There were also no differences between the groups for responses to any common variants or in the breadth of T-cell responses.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"HTBcommenttitle\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">comment<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">These data are useful but ideally should have been published earlier \u2013 and the phase 3 studies should also have also enrolled larger groups of HIV positive people and others at higher risk.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">The HIV positive group all had very high CD4 counts on ART when so-called \u201cnormal\u201d responses would be expected.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">It is important for all vaccines to report responses that include a wider range of low CD4 counts and higher levels of viral load.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBreference-noindent\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Reference<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"HTBreference-noindent\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Woldemeskel<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> BA et al. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The BNT162b2 mRNA <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">vaccine elicits robust humoral and cellular immune responses in people living with<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> HIV<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> ciab648,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">doi: 10.1093\/cid\/ciab648.
