{"id":41878,"date":"2021-12-20T07:45:24","date_gmt":"2021-12-20T07:45:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/?p=41878"},"modified":"2022-09-12T08:00:03","modified_gmt":"2022-09-12T08:00:03","slug":"european-aids-clinical-society-honours-simon-collins-for-longstanding-contribution-to-the-field-of-hiv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/41878","title":{"rendered":"European AIDS Clinical Society honours Simon Collins for longstanding contribution to the field of HIV"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><b>Polly Clayden, HIV i-Base<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-41495 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/logo4-223x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"182\" height=\"242\" \/>HIV i-Base\u2019s Simon Collins received the <\/span><\/b><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">biennial<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/b><b>European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS)<\/b><b><span lang=\"EN-US\"> award, announced at the October 2021 conference. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The EACS award recognises an individual\u2019s \u201c\u2026longstanding, impactful and sustained professional contribution to the field of HIV\u201d and is presented at the two-yearly meeting. Nominations are reviewed by a committee, representing a diversity of expertise and experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">This year the committee was unable to come to a consensus and honour just one nominee, so the award was given jointly to Professor Andrzej Horban of the University of Warsaw, Poland, for his outstanding contribution to HIV, both in his native country and throughout Eastern Europe, and to Simon.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div  class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41887\" class=\"wp-image-41887\" src=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/SC-oct-2021-1c-266x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"138\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/SC-oct-2021-1c-266x300.png 266w, https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/SC-oct-2021-1c-909x1024.png 909w, https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/SC-oct-2021-1c-768x865.png 768w, https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/SC-oct-2021-1c-1364x1536.png 1364w, https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/SC-oct-2021-1c.png 1561w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-41887\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Simon Collins, co-recipient of the EACS Award, 2021.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Presenting the award, Professor Peter Reiss, of Amsterdam University and the committee chair, explained that Simon co-founded i-Base in 2000, and that he has always campaigned for the rights of people living with HIV to be actively involved in both their own health and studies that may affect them and described some of Simon\u2019s many contributions to this end over the last two decades. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">He applauded Simon\u2019s detailed critiques of the latest HIV research, often before it appears in peer-reviewed publications and his commitment to developing and promoting community engagement and advocacy. He also noted how\u00a0he has more recently applied this expertise to COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">On hearing that he would be receiving this award, Simon responded: \u201cThis is a great honour that is definitely appreciated. It is also a really good way to recognise advocates as partners in HIV healthcare, many of whom work for years, often as volunteers, and often in much more difficult circumstances.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div  class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41475\" class=\"wp-image-41475\" src=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screenshot-2021-10-30-at-12.51.41.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"145\" height=\"180\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-41475\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Andrzej Horban, co-recipient of the EACS Award, 2021.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">i-Base also congratulates joint awardee Professor Horban\u00a0who has specialised in infectious diseases for 50 years.
