{"id":42702,"date":"2022-05-02T07:28:50","date_gmt":"2022-05-02T07:28:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/?p=42702"},"modified":"2022-05-04T18:46:55","modified_gmt":"2022-05-04T18:46:55","slug":"herd-immunity-unlikely-to-control-covid-19-opinion-article-from-us-niaid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/42702","title":{"rendered":"Herd immunity unlikely to control COVID-19: opinion article from US NIAID"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong>Simon Collins, HIV i-Base<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYFIRST\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/COVID-19-graphic.png\" width=\"231\" height=\"142\" \/>This opinion piece from the US NIAID reevaluates the relevance of herd immunity for COVID-19 and concludes that this is unlikely to generate long-term protection on a population level.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The article is optimistic that COVID-19 will still become more controlled, with minimal disruption to everyday life, at least in some settings (with vaccine access). <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">It also clearly shows that the leadership of NIAID want to move public expectations for future control away from potential of eradication such as smallpox. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Instead the article draws parallels with the Spanish influenza in 1918, whose variants were responsible for later pandemics (H2N2 in 1957, H3N2 in 1968, and H1N1 in 2009).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"HTBcommenttitle\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">comment<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">The failure of herd immunity to prevent transmission should not be a surprise given the high incidence new infections in the UK, despite high levels of vaccination and booster shots for vulnerable populations.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">The success of current vaccines are clearly shown by the lower rates of hospitalisations and mortality in those with vaccine cover.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBBODYtext\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">However, future risks are largely dependent on the pathogenic properties of new variants and whether broader vaccines are developed that will cope with these.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBreference-noindent\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Reference<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"HTBreference-noindent\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Morens DM,\u00a0\u00a0Folkers GK,\u00a0\u00a0Fauci AS.
