{"id":47627,"date":"2024-04-10T12:00:21","date_gmt":"2024-04-10T12:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/?p=47627"},"modified":"2024-04-10T13:06:52","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T13:06:52","slug":"australia-proposes-limited-use-of-doxypep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/47627","title":{"rendered":"Australia Consensus Statement on doxy-PEP proposes limited use in gay and bisexual men"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"row column\">\n<p><strong>Simon Collins, HIV i-Base<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On 1 April 2024, ASHM published a\u00a0consensus statement on the use of doxycycline post\u2010exposure prophylaxis (doxy\u2010PEP) in Australia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The statement was the result of a large stakeholder meeting and consultation in March 2023.<\/p>\n<p>It includes ten recommendations for community and clinicians and nine recommendations for research, guidelines, and policy.<\/p>\n<p>These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Doxy-PEP should be considered <strong>primarily<\/strong> for the prevention of syphilis in gay and bisexual men who are at risk of this STI.<\/li>\n<li>The reduction in chlamydia, and the lesser reduction of gonorrhoea, both or which are often asymptomatic, might also be important in some people.<\/li>\n<li>Some stakeholders thought doxy-PEP should be <strong>only<\/strong> be considered for the prevention of syphilis in this population.<\/li>\n<li>Concern over increasing\u00a0high rates of tetracycline resistance against gonorrhoea was a reason for limiting wider use.<\/li>\n<li>Research priorities included the importance of tracking antimicrobial resistance as part of the programme to provide doxy-PEP.<\/li>\n<li>The impact of doxy-PEP on male and cisgender female sexual partners or other sexual partners with a uterus was also considered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Statement will have considered clinical results presented at CROI 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, it will not reflect research presented at CROI 2024.<\/p>\n<p>References<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-heading\">Cornelisse VJ et al.
