{"id":52371,"date":"2025-09-16T14:17:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T14:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/?p=52371"},"modified":"2025-11-19T11:40:20","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T11:40:20","slug":"new-bashh-report-on-prep-access-and-uptake-in-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/52371","title":{"rendered":"New BASHH report on PrEP access and uptake in the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-52374 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BASHH-banner-620x151-1.png\" alt=\"Flying blue pills\" width=\"620\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BASHH-banner-620x151-1.png 620w, https:\/\/i-base.info\/htb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BASHH-banner-620x151-1-300x78.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Simon Collins, HIV i-Base<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On 15 September 2025, BASHH published a 16-page online report summarising experiences of almost 70 level-3 sexual health clinics across the UK that responded to a survey earlier this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Key points include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only 1% of PrEP users are cisgender women and 2% identify as transgender.<\/li>\n<li>Only 40% of services are able to offer appointments to initiate or continue PrEP within the recommended 48-hour target.<\/li>\n<li>Nurses were able to initiate PrEP in 77% of services and Health Advisers able to initiate in 31% of services.<\/li>\n<li>16% of services were not linked to an acute NHS trust or HIV service provider.<\/li>\n<li>10% did not have access to a local MDT for complex cases.<\/li>\n<li>58% of services offer a virtual PrEP option for follow-up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The report expands on barriers to PrEP in current services and innovative approaches to overcome them.<\/p>\n<p>This includes de-medicalising PrEP, easy transition from PEP to PrEP, more equitable access to second-line PrEP and the importance of campaigns to increase awareness of PrEP.<\/p>\n<h3>comment<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The results support the call for broader and easier access to PrEP, which was a key recommendation in the recent excellent BASHH\/BHIVA 2025 guidelines.
