{"id":25783,"date":"2025-01-27T13:45:54","date_gmt":"2025-01-27T13:45:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/qa\/?p=25783"},"modified":"2025-01-26T19:41:28","modified_gmt":"2025-01-26T19:41:28","slug":"how-does-dolutegravir-affect-my-kidney-function","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/i-base.info\/qa\/25783","title":{"rendered":"How does dolutegravir affect my kidney function?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello and many thanks for getting in touch.<\/p>\n<p>Kidney function can be reduced throughout our life and in most cases this is not permanent.<\/p>\n<p>Age, medication, dehydration (not having enough fluid intake) can affect the kidney function.<\/p>\n<p>What the eGFR shows:<\/p>\n<p>eGFR shows how fast can your kidneys remove toxins or other waste from your blood.<\/p>\n<p>It is calculated based on your race\/ethnicity, weight and height, sex, age and creatinine level.<\/p>\n<p>An eGFR over 60\u00a0mL\/min\/1.73m2 is considered quite good although in the UK the only result within normal range is over 90 mL\/min\/1.73m2.<\/p>\n<p>To answer your question about Dovato, your doctor is giving you good advice, in my opinion.<\/p>\n<p>Dovato is the best kidney-sparing combination \u00a0we have available right now.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes people who take certain medication present lower kidney function on the blood tests but that effect is not present when they are taken off the medication. A very good example\u00a0for that are the creatine supplements\u00a0that people take for the gym: the tests present reduced kidney function but if you stop them a week before getting tested the results are back to normal range.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, dolutegravir increases the creatinine in your blood so it makes your eGFR show a reduced value.<\/p>\n<p>This is to be expected and doesn&#8217;t affect your kidneys long-term.<\/p>\n<p>The drugs in <span class=\"il\">Dovato<\/span> (dolutegravir\u00a0+ lamivudine) have not had any kidney &#8211; toxic effect in any studies.<\/p>\n<p>Please let us know how you are getting on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My kidney function is slightly reduced lately with my eGFR coming down to 75 and my doctor suggested to switch to Dovato (Dolutegravir &#8211; Lamivudine).
