Thanks – this is an interesting question.<\/p>\n

The risk of catching HIV after it has been in contact with air is so low that it is often assumed that it is quickly killed on contact with air.<\/p>\n

However, some early studies reported that in lab experiments, HIV could be recovered from samples after hours and sometimes days. This includes this UK study from 1994<\/a> that also reviews earlier research.<\/p>\n

In practice though, this isn’t the same as showing that HIV is dried blood would be able to cause an infection in another person.<\/p>\n

This is because there is unlikely to be enough HIV to effectively be infectious. The process of transmission is also fragile and difficult. Even when direct transmission is possible, for example when having sex with someone who has a high viral without using a condom or PrEP, the risk per exposure is usually low (ie much less than 1%).<\/p>\n

Touching dry blood would not be a risk because skin is a very effective barrier.<\/p>\n

Importantly, no cases of HIV transmission have been reported though due to contact with dried blood or other dried fluids.<\/p>\n

This is why health authorities, including the NHS in the UK and the CDC in the US, don’t include contact with dried fluid as a risk. These large organisations base their recommendations on a careful review of all the scientific evidence.<\/p>\n

However, some other viruses – for example hepatitis B and C – can remain more infectious than HIV and for longer.<\/p>\n
