Some viruses are harmless and others can cause illness. Viral infections are treated with antiviral medicines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HIV<\/strong> belongs to a <strong>family of viruses<\/strong> called <strong>retroviruses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is why <strong>HIV drugs<\/strong> are called <strong>antiretrovirals (or ARVs)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A retrovirus needs to make a &#8216;backward step&#8217; in order to reproduce &#8211; hence &#8216;retro&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These other common viruses can also affect people with HIV.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/ttfa\/5-ois-and-coinfections\/9-hepatitis-b-and-c\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Hepatitis A, B and C.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/i-base.info\/ttfa\/5-ois-and-coinfections\/10-cmv-cytomegalovirus\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Cytomegalovirus (CMV).<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8).<\/li>\n<li>Human papilloma virus (HPV).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
