Q and A

Question

Will my baby be ok? I was diagnosed late in my pregnancy.

I was diagnosed with HIV very late into my pregnancy. My viral load was very high. I’m due to give birth on September 14th. Is my baby going to be OK?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Yes its possible that someone who is diagnosed late in pregnancy can go on to have a negative child. Its important however that you get specialist care and that you choose the most appropriate birthing option. Which if your viral load were still to be detectable would be a c-section.

If your viral load is detectable when you do give birth you’ll also need to formula feed your baby and not breastfeed them.
