PrEP and sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

PrEP does not protect against other STIs. Condoms can help prevent many of these though.

Although STIs are mostly easy to treat, symptoms can sometimes be unpleasant and sometimes serious.

  • This is why regular STI testing is recommended.
  • The HPV vaccine reduces the risk of genital warts and cervical and anal cancers.
  • Please ask your clinic or GP about this.
  • Your sexual health clinic should also provide vaccines for hepatitis A and B if needed, and for mpox.
  • In June 2025, the UK also published guidelines about doxyPEP to prevent syphilis.
  • From August 2025, a vaccine to prevent gonorrhoea will be available in the UK.
