Question

Can I safely keep chickens?

Can i safely keep chickens being HIV-positive, by taking precautions like wearing a mask and gloves whilst cleaning out coop?

Answer

You ask an interesting question and this isn’t something I know the answer to directly.

Most of the concerns about health and keeping animals relate to how strong your immune system is. For people whose CD4 count is over 350, or over 500 cells/mm3, especially if they are taking ARV drugs, may make any risk similar to HIV-negative people.

Taking care when cleaning chicken coops by wearing gloves and protective clothing, and washing after contact with your chickens, together with a caution about histoplasmosis, and a recommendation to talk to your doctor from the links below, seems good advice.

A quick google search for ‘hiv risk pet chicken’ found the following links that you use for further information.
