Q and A

Question

Do ARVs cause fertility problems?

I’m having problems with conceiving, is it because I’m on medication?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

ARVs aren’t known to cause fertility problems in women.

If you’ve been trying for a while, please talk to your doctor who can help.

Hi Tsekiso, HIV medication does not impact on your ability to ejaculate or reduce your fertility.

Please see this previous question about HIV and sex drive: https://i-base.info/qa/3120/

I have been taking HIV medication,Reydin and for the past few years I have been struggling to ejaculate, could the medication have an impact in me or maybe reduces my infertility?

Hi Regina, great that you and your partner are both on ART and planning a family. Sometimes becoming pregnant is difficult with or without HIV. Have you talked to you doctor and has the doctor helped?

Your doctor should be able to help with information about the best tim in your cycle to conceive. Also to test you both for fertility. People living with HIV should have access to all the same support services as people who are HIV negative.

Hi Nombulelo, I am sorry to hear you are having trouble conceiving. HIV treatment does not reduce your fertility. Have you been to see a doctor? As you have been trying for a number of years without success they should be able to offer investigations as yo why you are having trouble.

Hi Mirabel, I am sorry to hear you are struggling to get pregnant. ARVs do not effect fertility and they will not cause you to lose your menstruation. Have you spoken to a doctor about this? and how long have you not been menstruating for?

Hi Khutjo, I am sorry to hear you have been trying for so long. Being on ARVs does not reduce your fertility. As it keeps you healthy it can help with becoming pregnant. Have you mentioned that you are struggling to conceive to a doctor?
