Q and A

Question

I’m positive and not taking medication, is this a risk to others?

I’m positive and not on medication. Can I infect someone if I have sex without a condom?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

The simple answer is yes. If you’re not taking medication and your viral load is detectable (which for most people it is, other than elite controllers, please see here: https://i-base.info/elite-controller/) if you have sex without a condom, you’re putting sexual partners at risk.

If you want to ensure that there’s no risk, it’s important that you engage in treatment. Being on treatment is also important for your own health and wellbeing. Is there any reason why you’re not taking ARVs?
